After playing through the Original Campaign for NWN2 this april, which was a mixed experience, I finally got the chance to tackle the much acclaimed expansion Mask of the Betrayer. What a game, absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Just from the opening narration - a foreboding voice that talks about a hunger and a presence inside you - you can tell this is going to be very different to the original campaign that precedes it. It is darker, it asks questions about faith, justice, and existence, and its story .
Apart from the writing, which is the major strength of MotB, I love the new Epic spells, feats, and abilities that you can get for your character and companions. I played a Bard with some additional classes thrown in there for extra stuff (I consulted http://nwn2db.com/build/?148659 for my build), and it was super fun singing epic songs and buffing myself up with epic cleric spells. I also really liked how they improved on the resting from OC, in which you could just spam it after each fight which made the per rest restrictions silly. Here you have to carefully plan out your rests thanks to the Spirit Eater mechanic, which in turn makes combat more interesting since you have to manage your resources and can't just spam your best spells constantly. I read that some reviewers found the Spirit Eater mechanic annoying, and I have to disagree on that, I thought it was super flavorful and game impacting in a positive way.

In additon, I really enjoyed the quest design in MotB. Most of the quests offered multiple solutions and outcomes, and they also had some fun puzzle elements which was a nice mix-up from the classic Fetch, Escort, and Slay quest design that is common in RPGs.

What is bad in MotB though? Well, it is the Neverwinter Nights 2 engine, so expect bugs. Fortunately I didn't encounter as many in my MotB playthrough as I did in my OC playthrough, but they were still present. Most common was the bug where it seems like you're playing online with a very high ping and get teleported back to a previous location. There were also some crashes, camera positioning itself very poorly during cutscenes, companion AI acting weird, feats/spells/abilites not working correctly, etc. Thankfully the companion AI can be turned off, so for harder fights you can just control each companion individually, but it also helps immensely to tweak the AI in the 'Behavior' screen for each companion. The camera is also quite iffy and annoying to control at the start, but after tweaking some options and exclusively playing in 'Exploration mode' it wasn't too bad; just turn the camera with the middle mouse button, and click on the ground where you want to walk (you can also use WASD if you prefer that). In addition the engine is very poorly optimized, so use medium settings for shadows and turn off water effects; when I had them on I only reached 60 fps while in doors. Finally, save often, just in case you encounter some weird issue.
In conclusion, If you can't tell already, I highly recommend this game if you like RPGs. It is a modern classic, that is only hampered by the engine that it is in.
Now if you'll excuse me, I think it's about time I play another game that RPG-fans gush over... Planescape: Torment. Take care, fellow patient gamers!
